Baltık Alman kökenli olan Zander, Rus İmparatorluğu ve Sovyetler Birliği'nde roket biliminin ve uzay uçuşlarının öncüsüdür. Sovyetler Birliği'nde havalanması için ilk sıvı yakıtlı roket olan GIRD-X'i tasarlamıştır ve uzay yolculuğuyla ilgili teoriler üretmiştir.
