Wittig reaksiyonunda fosfonyum ilürleri olarak adlandırılan bileşikler kullanılarak aldehit ve ketonlardan alkenlerin sentezi için bir yöntem bulmuştur.
1979 yılında Herbert C. Brown ile birlikte Nobel Kimya Ödülü'nü paylaşmıştır.
