Kendisi daha çok fincan çay anlamına gelen bir kalem adı Issa (一 茶) olarak tanınmaktadır.
Kobayashi Issa, Matsuo Bashō, Yosa Buson ve Masaoka Shiki ile birlikte Japonya'nın dört büyük haiku ustasından biri olarak kabul edilir.
