Zimbabve'nin güneyindeki Bulawayo'nun 35 kilometre güneyinde yer alan granit tepeler ve ormanlık vadilerden oluşan Matobo veya Matopo Tepelerinin çekirdeğini oluşturmaktadır. Tepeler 2 milyar yıl önce granit yüzeyin aşınması sonucu oluştu, oluşan tepelerden kayalar kopmuş ve geriye, üzerine bitki örtüsü serpiştirilmiş kırılmış tepecikler kalmıştır. Ndebele ulusunun kurucusu olan Mzilikazi, alana "Çıplak Tepeler" anlamına gelen Matobo adını vermiştir.
