The mausoleum was built in 1196 and is located next to the largest Umayyad mosque in the Old City of Damascus. The sarcophagus in this mausoleum contains the remains of the Great Arab commander Saladdin (1138-1193), the Sultan of Egypt, who gave a serious rebuff to the crusaders.
