Böyle olduğu kabul edilirse ve daha önce naiplik yapan Neithhotep hiçbir zaman bağımsız bir şekilde hüküm sürmediyse, Merneith kayıtlı tarihteki ilk kadın firavun ve hüküm süren en eski kraliçe olabilir. Hükümdarlığı MÖ 2950 civarında belirsiz bir süre boyunca gerçekleşti.
Merneith'in adı «Neith'in Sevdiği» anlamına gelir ve stelinde o eski Mısır tanrısının sembolleri bulunur. Djer'in kızı olabilir ve muhtemelen Djet'in karısıydı.
