Mikio Naruse, Japon Sineması'nda genellikle göz ardı edilmesine karşın kendine has bir tarz oluşturarak 90'dan fazla film üretmeyi başarmasıyla aslında birçok açıdan sinema tarihinin en önemli yönetmenlerinden biri.
1905'te Tokya'da doğan Naruse, birkaç yıl aralıklarla da olsa aslında Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi ve Akira Kurosawa gibi Japon Sineması’nın mihenk taşlarından olan erken dönem yönetmenlerin çağdaşı konumunda.
Ozu ve Mizoguchi’den tamamen farklı değerler üzerine filmlerini inşa eden yönetmen, geleneklere ve liberal hümanizme değindiği yapımlarında özellikle kadına bakış üzerinden kendi tarzını inşa etmiştir.
