Capsicum chinense ve Capsicum frutescens'in bir melezi olup Bangladeş'teki Naga morich ile yakından ilişkilidir.
Bhut jolokia, 1,041,427 SHU ile 2007 yılında Guiness Dünya Rekorlar Kitabı'na dünyanın en acılı biberi olarak girdi. Günümüzde ise dünyanın dördüncü en acılı biberidir.
