The St. Francis of Assisi church also called the Catholic Cathedral of Rhodes, is located by St. Anthony’s Gate, or the Gate of Saint Athanasios, a popular entrance into the historic walled medieval city of Rhodes. The locals also refer to it as Saint Francis' Gate due to the church of Saint Francis of Assisi, Designed by Italian architect Armando Bernabiti, it was completed in 1939 during the Italian occupation of the island.
