Tennessee (TN), Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin kurucu eyaletlerinden biridir ve 1796 yılında 16. eyalet olarak birliğe katılmıştır.
6,5 milyon nüfusu ile 16. sırada bulunan eyalet, toplamda 109.152 km2’lik alanıyla da 34. sırada yer almaktadır.
Eyaletin isminin Cherokee kabilesinin en önemli köylerinden biri olan Tenase’den türetildiği düşünülmektedir.
Tennessee’nin birden çok takma ismi vardır. Bunlardan en çok kullanılanı «Volunteer State», yani Gönüllü Eyalet’tir. Bu isim ise, 1812 Savaşı’na gönüllü olarak katılan Tennesseeli askerlerin Battle of New Orleans’ta göstermiş oldukları üstün kahramanlık nedeniyle eyalete verilmiştir.
