Cadde, Toronto'nun anayollarından biri olup güneyde Ontario Gölü'nden başlayarak kuzeye doğru York'ta East Gwillimbury'de Simcoe Gölü'ne kadar devam etmektedir.
Cadde, 1796 yılında ilk Ontario valisi John Graves Simcoe tarafından inşa edilmiş olup adını Britanya savaş bakanı George Yonge'dan almaktadır.
Yonge Street, daha önceden Ontario Highway 11'in güney ayağı olması nedeniyle 1999 yılına kadar Guinness Dünya Rekorlar Kitabı'na 1.896 km uzunluğu ile dünyanın en uzun caddesi olarak kabul edilmekteydi. Caddenin asıl uzunluğu ise 86 km'dir.
