Abisal bölge, sürekli karanlığın (afotik) bir bölgesidir çünkü güneş ışınları ona nüfuz edemez. Bu bölgenin suları soğuktur ve genellikle 0 ile 1 ºC arasında salınan bir sıcaklık vardır.
Bu alanda kalıcı ışık yokluğu nedeniyle bitkiler bulunmuyor ve fauna, aşırı ışık yokluğu, düşük oksijen konsantrasyonları, yüksek basınçlar ve düşük sıcaklıklara karşı güçlü adaptasyonlara maruz kalmak zorunda kaldı.
Bu bölge 2000-6000 metre arasında, batyal bölgenin hemen altında ve hadal zonunun üzerinde yer almaktadır.
