Longyearbyen, nüfusu binin üzerinde olan dünyanın en kuzeyindeki yerleşim birimidir. Son sayımlara göre yerlilerin sayısı 2.100 civarında.
Kasaba, adını 1900’lerin başlarında Arctic Coal Company’yi kuran Amerikalı John Munro Longyear’dan alıyor. Longyearbyen, Norveççe «Longyear City» anlamına geliyor.
Kasaba II. Dünya Savaşı sırasında neredeyse tamamen yıkılmıştı. Almanya’nın Norveç işgali sırasında, Kriegsmarine (Alman ordusunun iki savaş gemisi) bu bölgeye yanaştı. Ancak olaydan sonra Norveç garnizonu kısa süre sonra tekrar kuruldu ve ihtilafın ardından kasaba yeniden inşa edildi.
