Karadağ'ın başkenti olan Podgorica, kelime olarak 'küçük tepenin altında' demektir. Podgorica'nın hemen bitişiğindeki Gorica tepesinin altında kurulduğu için şehre bu isim verilmiştir.
Yine de, Podgorica'nın tarih boyunca farklı isimleri olmuştur. Osmanlı döneminde Böğürtlen ve böğürtlen anlamına gelen Burguriçe isimleri şehre uygun görülmüştür. Yugoslavya zamanında ise buraya Titograd ismi verilmiştir.
