Devlet Tarih Müzesi bugün Moskova'daki ve tüm Rusya'daki en büyük ulusal müze kurumu olarak kabul ediliyor. Başkentin merkezinde Kızıl Meydan'da yer almaktadır.
1990 yılında Kızıl Meydan'daki Devlet Tarih Müzesi binası UNESCO Kültürel Miras Alanları Listesi'ne dahil edildi.
Devlet Tarih Müzesi fonu bugün yaklaşık 5 milyon konu ve 14 milyon belgesel sergi içermektedir. Bunların sadece %0,5'i ziyaretçiler için sergileniyor. Ana kısım, nemin %55 ve sıcaklığın 18 derece olduğu özel depolama tesislerindedir.
Müzenin koleksiyonları bölünür ve bölümlerin yargı yetkisine devredilir: arkeolojik, değerli metaller, Rus resmi, nümizmatik, silahlar, kitaplar, haritacılık ve diğerleri.
