Normanlar, 10. yüzyılda Kuzey Fransa’ya bugünkü Normandiya bölgesine yerleşen Viking kökenli bir halktı.
Fransa krallarının yönetimi altında Viking fatihleri yavaş yavaş Franklarla iç içe girdi. Fransız dilini ve orijinal çok tanrılı dinlerini terk ederek Hristiyan dinini benimsediler. Böylece Norman halkı doğmuş oldu.
Normanların kökeni Danimarka ve Norveç’ten çok sayıda Viking korsan grubunun Avrupa kıyılarını yağmaladığı 9. yüzyılın başlarına kadar uzanmaktadır.
