October 12, 1715 - January 19, 1730 Peter II. Peter II was Emperor of Russia from 1927 to 1930, the only son of Prince. Alexius, grandson of Peter the Great. His death ended the male line of the Romanov dynasty. Peter II was born in St. Petersburg on October 12, 1715. His mother died when Peter was only ten days old. His father, Prince Alexius, was accused of treason by Peter the Great, and in 1718 Alexius died in prison.

Petro, Rusya’yı modernleştirmek adına oldukça önemli bir adım atmış ve Avrupa’yı ziyaret eden ilk Rus çarı olmuştur.
Petro iktidara geldiğinde Avrupa aydınlanma çağına girmiş bulunmaktaydı. Buna karşın Rusya devlet sistemi ve toplumsal yapısı Ortaçağ izlerini barındırmaktaydı.
Ortaçağ’ı temsil eden bir görsel Avrupa seyahati boyunca bu geri kalmışlığı tespit eden Petro ülkesine döndüğünde Rus devletinin tüm sektör ve alanlarını kapsayan bir dizi reform hareketlerine başlamıştır.
Petro bu reform sürecini gerçekleştirirken batı devlet sistemlerini taklit etmemiş, aksine batılı tarzda yenilikler ile geleneksel yapıyı harmanlayarak Rusya’ya özgü bir siyasal sistemin kurucusu olmuştur.
Büyük Petro’nun giriştiği bu köklü modernleşme hareketlerinin simgesi kuşkusuz St. Petersburg şehri olmuştur.
