Rusya'nın kuzeybatısında, Baltık Denizi kıyısında UNESCO Dünya Mirası alanı olan Neva Nehri ve 42 ada üzerinde konumlanmış, 55 kanal, 500’e yakın köprü ile "Kuzey’in Venedik"i ünvanını hak ediyor.
Rusya’nın Avrupa’ya açılan kapısı olarak da adlandırılan şehrin ismi Rus devriminden sonra Leningrad olarak değiştirilmiştir. Günümüzdeki ismi içerisindeki "Peter" çarın isminden, "Burg" ise Almanca dilindeki kale kelimesinden gelmektedir.
