In the 19th century The monument to Minin and Pozharsky stood in the center of Red Square. The prince Dmitry Pozharsky and the merchant Kuzma Minin were the heroes of the 17th century war. They gathered the all-Russian volunteer army and expelled the Poles from the Moscow Kremlin. The monument was erected in 1818 soon after the victory over Napoleon, symbolizing the rise in patriotic consciousness.
