A supreme court is the highest court within the hierarchy of courts in most legal jurisdictions. Other descriptions for such courts include court of last resort, apex court, and high (or final) court of appeal. Broadly speaking, the decisions of a supreme court are not subject to further review by any other court.

1787 Anayasası ile federal mahkeme sisteminin başı olarak kurulan Yüce Mahkemeye Anayasa, yasalar ve ABD'nin imzaladığı antlaşmalar çerçevesinde ortaya çıkan davalara, ABD'nin taraf olduğu anlaşmazlıklara, eyaletler arasında ya da farklı eyaletlerin yurttaşları arasında ortaya çıkan anlaşmazlıklara, deniz kuvvetlerinin ve deniz ticaretinin yargılama alanına giren davalarına ve elçileri, öteki kamu temsilcilerini ve konsolosları ilgilendiren davalara bakma yetkisi verilmiştir.
