Hikaye, 9. yüzyıl Japonya'sında fakir bir bambu kesicisini anlatıyor. Bir gün bu bambu kesicisinin başına bir mucize geliyor. Ormanda bir bambu sırığının içinde parmak boyunda bir prenses buluyor. Prensesi evine getiriyor ve çocuğu olmayan bambu kesicisi karısıyla birlikte bu küçük kızı evlat ediniyor. Bambunun içinden doğan kız bir bambu bitkisi gibi hızla büyüyor ve hikaye bu kızın yani Prenses Kaguya’nın hayatını anlatıyor.
