Ya da İdil Avrupa'nın en uzun ırmağıdır. Rusça Volga adı Ana Slavca Vlga'dan gelir. Baltık-Fin dilleri kökenli valkea ve "Valgõ" sözcüklerinden de adının geldiği iddia edilmektedir. Uzunluğu yaklaşık 3531 km olan Volga, Moskova ile Sankt-Peterburg arasındaki Valday Tepeleri'nden doğar. Deniz seviyesinden 28 metre aşağıda olan Hazar Denizi'ne dökülür. Valday tepelerinde bulunan birçok göl ve bataklıktan gelen kaynak kollarının birleşmesiyle meydana gelen Volga, Rjev'den itibaren ulaşıma elverişli bir hâlde akar.
