Thomism is the philosophical school that followed in the legacy of Thomas Aquinas. The word comes from the name of its originator, whose summary work Summa Theologiae has arguably been second only to the Bible in importance to the Catholic Church.

Thomas Aquinas, 1225-1274 yıllarında yaşamış ve bilgi, metafizik, siyaset, ruhun ölümsüzlüğü hakkında fikirleri ile skolastik düşüncenin önemli ismi ünlü hristiyan filozofdur.
Aynı zamanda fikirleriyle orta çağ skolastik düşüncesinden rönesans düşüncesine geçişte önemli bir yere de sahiptir.
Onun yaşadığı dönemde hukuk ve adalet konularında hristiyan geleneğinin ve kadim kilise insanlarının belirlediği kurallar bulunmaktaydı.
Aynı şekilde, cicero ve aristo gibi bilgelikleri orta çağ insanının saygısına mazhar olmuş hristiyanlık öncesi filozofların da etkileri ile düşünce dünyasını şekillendiriyordu.
Aquinas birden fazla doğru olamayacağını düşünüyordu ve bu nedenle roma hukuku, kutsal metinler ve antik çağın sevilen görüşlerini bağdaştırarak batı felsefesinin çok önemli yapı taşlarından biri oldu.
