The main stone of the monument was laid on 23 April 1901, and the official opening took place on 30 August 1907 in the presence of Liberation war veterans. The Monument to the Tsar Liberator was erected in honour of the Liberation of Bulgaria and pays tribute to the king - the Russian Emperor Alexander II Nikolaevich, who led the Liberation War of 1877/1878.
