St Mary's was opened on 15 September 1835 by the Vicar Apostolic, Dr Briggs.The first priest was Father Philip Kearney. The Church was reconsecrated on 24 September 1947. Some of these records date from the period of the Church's residence at Dunning Street, Bishopwearmouth (1790-1835).
