  • He was still only four when he became David II of Scotland on the death of his father on 7 June 1329. His succession to the crown caused immediate problems.
  • David II died unexpectedly and at the height of his power in Edinburgh Castle on 22 February 1371. He was buried in Holyrood Abbey.
  • Finding the money to pay the ransom (never paid in full) occupied him for most of the rest of his inglorious reign. His nephew Robert II succeeded him.
  • After seven years of exile, his supporters eventually gained the upper hand at home and David was able to return to Scotland in June 1341.
