It is part of a greater historical complex of the old town/fortress called Prizrenac. The Monastery itself was founded by the Serbian Emperor Stefan Dušan between 1343 and 1352 on the site of an earlier church. It later became his burial church. It was not only until early twenties of the 20th century that its remains were found and later on explored.
