  • Salta, city, capital of Salta provincia (province), northwestern Argentina. It lies in the irrigated Andes Mountains valley of Lerma, on a headstream of the Salado River. It was founded in 1582 as San Felipe de Lerma by Hernando de Lerma, governor of Tucumán. The Spanish royal forces were defeated at Salta (1813) during the Argentine War of Independence and capitulated to General Manuel Belgrano there.
