The Lions Gate Bridge was built because the developers owned land in West Vancouver and wanted better access to their land so that they could make their land worth more. Prior to the bridge being built people had to take boats across the water. The Guiness family of Guiness Beer fame owned a development called the 'British Properties' in West Vancouver that the bridge would provide better access to.
