Forerunner of this Museum was called Museum of Antiquity of Vilnius and was founded in 1855 by Eustachy Tyszkiewicz and saw vicissitudes of wars, changing regimes and finally after independence, renamed as National Museum of Lithuania in 1992. The Museum have five important departments, namely, history including modern history, archeology, iconography, ethnography and numismatics.
