Fort Winiary was the main fort of fortress Poznań and is constructed in the period 1828 - 1842 and was used as POW camp for Allied prisoners during the German occupation of Poland. It was held for 5 days by the German forces, who centered their defence in this fort, during the Battle of Posen (1945), but was eventually taken on 23 February 1945 by the Red Army.
