The first Louis XIV statue was created in 1713 but was melted down during the French Revolution to make cannons. The current statue, sculpted by François-Frédéric Lemot, was erected in the square in 1825. The statues representing the Rhône and Saône were hidden during the French Revolution and then returned to their places in 1826.
