  • Newport, city, Newport county, southeastern Rhode Island, U.S. It occupies the southern end of Rhode (Aquidneck) Island in Narragansett Bay (there bridged to Jamestown). From the harbour on the west, the city rises up a gentle hillside to a low plateau. Newport was founded in 1639 by a group of religious refugees from Massachusetts who had settled at the northern end of the island and founded the present town of Portsmouth.
