Birmingham’da 1982 yılında «Civil Defence» adlı bir punk grubu olarak başladı. Grubun kurucuları lise öğrencileri olan Nick Bullen ve Miles Ratledge adlı elemanlardı. Elemanların ilk yaptıkları kayıt, fanı oldukları punk gruplarından Crass’ın firmasından çıkan Bullshit Detector#3 compilation’ı içindi.
