The St. Petersburg mining university is the oldest technical university in Russia and one of the oldest technical institutes in Europe. This university was established in 1773 as the mining school of St. Petersburg. It was named a school for mainly social reasons, because the founders of the university wanted all the Russian people to have the opportunity to join this school and learn the science of mining, not just the noble Russian.
