Almanya'nın en kuzeydeki eyaletidir. Güneyde Hamburg eyaletinden, kuzeyde Danimarka'ya kadar uzanır ve Jutland Yarımadasının güney yarısını kaplar. Yüzölçümü 15.729 km'dir. Doğuda Baltık Denizi, batıda Kuzey Denizi, güneydoğuda da Mecklenburg-Vorpommern eyaleti ile çevrilidir. Yönetim merkezi Kiel'dir.
