In the middle of the square stands a tall column – a monument to Admiral Nelson. Londoners first saw it in 1842. The column is 52 metres or a hundred and seventy feet high. On the top of the column stands an eighty feet tall statue of Lord Nelson. The four bronze lions appeared near the column much later in 1868.
