Gaius Julius Caesar (13 July 100 BC - 15 March 44 BC) was a Roman general and politician who played a critical role in the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire, reigning as dictator from October 49 BC to March 44 BC. Caesar was a man of the people due to his various conquests in Europe and his leadership of the Populares (a classical populist faction of Roman politics), and he became known as one of the greatest generals in history.
