The first wooden church in the name of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” in the Yeletsk Znamensky Convent was built in 1770. After a visit to the monastery by Tikhon of Zadonsk and his blessing, the consecration of a new stone church took place in 1813. In 1929, the monastery was given over for housing to the families of workers from the Yelets factories, and all the property of the temple was confiscated.
