19. yüzyılın en bilinen İsviçreli ressamlarından biridir. Hodler, eserleriyle dışavurumcu sanatçıları büyük ölçüde etkileyen isimlerden oldu. İlk eserleri gerçekçi bir tarzda portreler, manzaralar ve tür resimleriydi. Daha sonra "paralelizm" adını verdiği kişisel bir sembolizm biçimi benimsedi.
