The Central Bank of Iraq was created on March 6, 2004, as the country's independent central bank. Its formation was necessitated by the events that led up to and the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iraq as well as the fall of former leader Saddam Hussein. The bank was established with 100 billion dinars in capital provided by the state in exchange for 100% of the bank's capital stock.
