Франц Марк — немецкий живописец, яркий представитель немецкого экспрессионизма.
Родился 8 февраля 1880 года в Мюнхене в семье профессионального пейзажиста Вильгельма Марка.
В 1900 году начал обучение в Мюнхенской академии художеств. Дважды (в 1903 и 1907 году) посещал Париж, где познакомился с французским постимпрессионизмом и, в частности, с живописью Гогена и Ван Гога.
В поисках собственного стиля художник обратился к анатомии животных. Они, по сравнению с человеком, казались ему высшими, чистыми существами.
В 1911 году вместе с Августом Маке и Василием Кандинским организовал собственное художественное объединение «Синий всадник», ставшее фронтом немецкого экспрессионизма.
В начале Первой мировой войны Франц Марк ушёл добровольцем на фронт. В ходе Верденской операции был смертельно ранен осколком снаряда и скончался в возрасте 36 лет, так и не реализовав до конца свои творческие планы.
