Modern İtalyanca'da tam anlamıyla "Halk Meydanı" anlamına gelir fakat tarihsel olarak Latince'de kavak anlamına gelen populus kelimesinden türetilmiştir. Daha sonra, adını Piazza'nın kuzeydoğu köşesindeki Santa Maria del Popolo kilisesinden almıştır.
