Stadın inşasına 1909'de başlanılıp 22 Ocak 1911 tarihinde Genoa CFC ve FC Internazionale Milano arasında oynanan maçla açıldı. 1 Ocak 1933'te stada Genoa'nın eski kaptanı ve İtalya'nın I. Dünya Savaşı kahramanlarından olan Luigi Ferraris 'in adı verildi.
