Endonezya'nın Kuzey Sumatra bölgesinin başkentidir. 2.392.922 kişilik nüfusuyla Endonezya'nın en büyük üçüncü şehridir. Şehir Sumatra adasının kuzey kıyısında bulunur ve kuzeyinde Malakka Boğazı yer almaktadır. 1590'lı yıllarda Guru Patimpus tarafından Kampung Medan adlı küçük bir köy olarak kurulmuştur.
