1831'de George ve Charles Merriam şirketi Springfield, Massachusetts'te G&C Merriam Co. olarak kurdular. 1843'te Noah Webster öldükten sonra, şirket An American Dictionary of the English Language'ın haklarını Webster'ın malikanesinden satın aldı. Tüm Merriam-Webster sözlükleri kökenlerini bu kaynağa kadar izler.
1964'te Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., Merriam-Webster, Inc.'i yan kuruluş olarak satın aldı. Şirket bugünkü adını 1982 yılında almıştır.
