Üçüncü nesil iPhone ve iPhone 3G'nin halefidir. 3GS, 8 Haziran 2009 tarihinde, San Francisco'da yer alan Moscone Center'da düzenlenen WWDC 2009 etkinliğinde tanıtılmıştır. 3GS adındaki "S" takısı, Türkçe karşılığı "Hız" olan "Speed" kelimesinin baş harfidir.
