Madrid'in ana meydanı olan Puerta del Sol, ‘Güneşin Kapısı’ anlamına gelir.
1510 yılına kadar burada duran ‘Puerta’nın (Kapı), güneşi temsil ettiği söylenir (Madrid’e giriş kapısıdır). Bu yüzden de meydana Puerta del Sol, yani Güneşin Kapısı adı verilmiş.
Madrid tarihi boyunca meydan, ulaşımın, entelektüel ve ekonomik faaliyetlerin odak noktası olmuş. Şehrin modern kolaylıkları (elektrik lambaları, tramvaylar) ile donatılan ilk bölümü olması bakımından da önemli bir yere sahip.
