British Guiana (now Guyana), is situated on the north coast of South America, lying to the east of Venezuela. It covers an area of around 90,272 square miles, and in 1911 the population of British Guiana was around 269,000, rising to 314,000 in 1917. Its principal exports were rum and molasses, forming around 81% of domestic exports in 1914.
