Поэтому и существует устойчивая фраза: if I were you. Дословно она означает «если бы я был тобой». Быть кем-то другим невозможно, поэтому используем were. Сказать «If I was you» невозможно, если только говорящий не является героем фантастической истории о переселении душ. Условное наклонение в английском иногда сложно распознать.
